ZTILE’s artisanal collections are crafted in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, a historic ceramic region defined by mineral-rich clays, kiln culture, and centuries of expertise. Using traditional techniques perfected over generations — small-batch firing, hand glazing, and intentional variation — each tile embraces the beauty of natural imperfection.
These ceramics do not mimic other materials. They celebrate clay as a living medium, resulting in surfaces with depth, nuance, and individuality. No two pieces are the same, and therefore no installation is ever repeated — offering architects and designers materials with unique presence and character.
In an era defined by speed, our Japanese ceramic production instead values patience, and moves at a human pace. Clay is first shaped, left to dry naturally, and then glazed, often by hand. Products then undergo slow firing cycles lasting up to two days in a tunnel kiln at over 1200°C. This allows glazes and clays to mature naturally.
Natural variations in colour, tone, movement, size, shape, and texture are created by an interaction of heat, atmosphere, clay, and glaze during the high-temperature firing, due to temperature differences within the kiln. These variations are not flaws, but signatures of a process where human touch and imperfection are embraced and essential, adding to the desirable character of our Japanese ceramics.
Our commitment to slow craft is paired with thoughtful sustainability. Offcuts, unfired clay, and imperfect pieces are routinely recycled into new production. For example, our Kayo collections are produced with close to 50% recycled materials. This reflects our cultural ethic of reducing waste and honouring material, and results in collections shaped not by industrial uniformity, but by mastery and time.
